DARLINGTON College journalism apprentice Sophie Skyring is heading to Manchester next month for an awards ceremony that rewards the best trainee journalists in the UK.
Sophie, who works as a community reporter for Archant in Norwich, has been shortlisted in the NCTJ Awards for Excellence Apprentice of the Year Award after just six months in her role.
Sophie got her break into journalism through the Community News Project, an initiative between the National Council for the Training of Journalists and Meta, where young journalists get to the heart of under-reported communities.
Sophie said after taking on the role: “I can honestly say that in the few short months I have been part of the scheme the Community News Project has changed my life. I always knew that writing was my dream, I always knew I was interested in human stories but I never had a way into it. Being given the chance to be part of the team has given me clear structures to become successful, and I’m immersed in an office environment where I am encouraged to learn from everyone around me. No question or query is a big ask for my editors to answer, and I feel I now have endless possibilities for my future. This opportunity really is a dream come true.”
Former Darlington College journalism apprentices Brad Deas, Nathan Atkinson and James Robinson also are shortlisted for trainee category awards in the Excellence Awards to be held at Halle St Peter’s in Manchester on March 17.
