Subject Overview
Science is an exciting and powerful subject. It is a way of discovering what’s in the universe, in our bodies and how things work today and likely to work in the future. It develops new technologies, which help to treat diseases, feed the growing population and overcome many problems. We offer Applied Science Level 3 with the opportunity to learn by doing and to acquire excellent practical and research skills..
The Level 3 course covers all three sciences (biology, chemistry and physics) in general, but also allows taking optional units and specialisation in forensic science or medical science. During your studies, you will gain knowledge and skills in analytical chemistry, genetic and microbiological techniques, medical physics, forensic evidence collection and analysis, among others.
The Life Sciences Manufacturing Academy
Our Level 3 courses will also include an Inspirational two-week placement in conjunction with CPI, FujiFIlm Diosynth Biotechnologies and the National Horizon Centre.
The first week is spent between the National Horizon Centre and CPI which is located just behind the college campus, where you will receive an introduction to Life Sciences, hands on practical experience of working in the NHC laboratories and enable you to develop a business plan which will be used in the second week.
The second week you will spend the week within industry, this will be at FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies. Here you will move around all the departments of the organisation, talking to employees about your business plan.
After the two-week programme, you will be assigned a mentor, who they will meet with you once a month for 6 months after the 2-week programme.
