Become a Governor

Darlington College is a general further education college offering a very wide choice of vocational and professional study options to both 16-18 year old and adult students. Courses cater for students of all abilities, from entry level to apprenticeships and degrees, in subjects ranging from accountancy to catering and everything in between. College facilities are housed in impressive buildings in Darlington’s flagship Central Park development.

Experience

We are seeking applications from interested parties who feel that they have a commitment to education and lifelong learning at all levels; have experience and expertise relevant to the strategic management of a large organisation; the enthusiasm and commitment for a challenging voluntary role and a firm belief in improving and maintaining high standards of public service.

In particular we are looking for people with one or more of the following skills and experiences:

  • Good governance skills and the ability to ask searching questions
  • Experience of working in a finance / audit environment, ideally with an accountancy qualification
  • Experience of working in a Human Resources / employment law environment

Involvement
Appointments are for up to four years in the first instance.

The Corporation usually meets six times per year, with meetings scheduled for Tuesday evenings from 5.15 pm. Governors are also invited to join one of the Corporation’s main Committees (Finance, Estates and Employment, Audit, Quality and Standards, Student Liaison); these committees meet between three and five times per year. The Corporation meets once or twice per year for full day strategic planning events and governors are also encouraged to attend relevant college events throughout the year. Governors need to commit time to prepare for meetings, including reading and reviewing papers, reports and minutes.

The Corporation is committed to promoting equality of opportunity and welcomes and encourages applications from people of all backgrounds. We would particularly welcome applications from women, black and minority ethnic candidates, as they are currently under represented within the Governing Body.

The role is voluntary but reasonable expenses, including childcare or similar costs, can be reimbursed. Governors report many professional rewards, such as boardroom experience, which may contribute towards long-term career development.

Expressions of interest in becoming a governor of the college are always welcome and in the first instance please contact the Head of Governance, Carol Meade, via email cmeade@darlington.ac.uk.
